There has seen a growing awareness of the dangers of sexually transmitted infections over last few years, but the fact remains that the best treatment is avoidance. Using a condom greatly reduces the risk of contracting a whole range of diseases, and therefore should be the first step on the path to continuing good health.

However, when risks have been taken, there are tests available that will confirm or deny the presence of an sexually transmitted infections.

The local genitourinary medicine (GUM) clinic is staffed by specialists who are trained to deal with patients of all ages in an understanding and discreet manner. Anonymity is guaranteed for all visitors, because the staff won't even inform a person's own GP of their visit. In fact, you don't even need to give them your real name when you first register; as long as you have a contact telephone number, that's all you need.

The most common sexually transmitted infections among young people in the United Kingdom is Chlamydia, but on the plus side it's easily treated. It's often known as the "silent infection" because in many cases it shows no symptoms at all. Those that do have them will notice unusual discharges and pain when passing urine. In women, it can cause heavier menstruation and in men it can lead to testicular swelling.

The standard Chlamydia test is quick, pain-free and simple, usually just involving the supply of a urine sample. For some women, it may require a vaginal swab, too. All samples are sent away for analysis, and results are available after about 10 days. The test has a high degree of accuracy, so patients can feel confident about their diagnosis. Once confirmed, the treatment is relatively simple.

Antibiotics are usually prescribed for Chlamydia, and are likely to be either a single dose of Azithromycin or a longer course of Doxycycline. These medicines are generally enough to clear the infection, but if they're not successful it may indicate the presence of a different sexually transmitted infections. If that's the case, another visit to the GUM clinic is recommended.

Because Chlamydia is so easily spread, it's advisable to inform your partner if you have the infection. That way, he or she can then take a test as well. Once it's cleared up, patients should avoid sexual contact for at least 7 days. It's advisable for sexually active people to take a test every time they have intimate contact with a new partner.

Because they're generally more sexually active, people under the age of 25 are offered a Chlamydia test every year. It's advisable to take advantage of this, because the fact that there are usually no noticeable symptoms means you could be carrying the infection, and indeed spreading it, without even realising it. Tests on the NHS are free of charge, and 100% discreet.
